NUI Galway faced University of Ulster, Jordanstown in the Sigerson Cup quarter final on Wednesday. The game went right down to the last plays such is the competitive nature of the Sigerson Cup and UUJ came away with a three point victory after a succession of late scores.
The home side started very well with a first minute point form Fiachra Deasmunaigh whose solo run through the defence ended with a point.
UUJ hit right back through Kieran Hughes. There were plenty of chances in the opening period but there was no score again until a swift NUIG attack led to a well taken goal by Jason Doherty in the 9th minute.
Both sides missed a number of frees and struggled in that department throughout. Jordanstown scored three points in as many minutes to bring the scores to level after 20 minutes at 1-1 to 0-4.
The Galway side ended their 17minute wait for a score when corner back Laurence Healy pointed after being set up well by substitute Kevin Conlon.
Gerard McNulty levelled for the northern side and then Neil Douglas pointed the only placed ball of the first half to restore a one point lead. But NUIG could have gone into the half time break behind if UUJ midfielder Neil Macadam had not blasted over from 10 metres out.
Neither team would have been too disappointed with level scores at the break. NUIG had the wind at their backs for the second half but it was UUJ that scored first from a Paul Devlin free. Robbie McNabb put the away side two ahead.
The NUIG midfield dominated for the next 20minutes and they retook the lead on 41 minutes after a trio of scores coming from Shane Moran, who slotted over after an excellent dummy, Jason Doherty and Kevin Conlon.
They could have put one foot in the Sigerson weekend when they unlocked the Ulster University defence but Kevin Conlon’s low shot went narrowly wide.
They continued to dominate but were not able to convert. Gerard McNulty was able to sneak a point against the run of play to tie it up again with 10 minutes remaining.
It was a tug-of-war from there on in and NUIG looked as if they would be the ones to pull over the line. An excellent turnover from team captain Kieran McDonald gave the impression that it would be his side’s day but a number of hurried shots allowed UUJ to stay in the hunt.
Kieran Hughes moved to midfield changed the momentum. His ball winning and distribution effectively won it for “The Poly”. Robbie McNabb pointed and NUIG let go of the rope. UUJ won a penalty after the NUIG ‘hurry up’ did not work out.
McNabb elected for the single and seconds later McNulty tagged on another point to end any hopes of an NUIG comeback.
“We are gutted and obviously the dressing room in gutted. We were obviously hoping as hosts to be here for the weekend in two weeks time. We were certainly good enough but unfortunately we didn’t take our chances” said NUIG manager John Maughan.
“It was always going to be the next team to score with seven or eight minutes to go that would win it and we had those chances but Jordanstown are a quality, a good side with quality footballers and they got that little break and we couldn’t take our chances” continued the Mayo man.
One of those quality players was Kieran Hughes he said afterwards that “A game can turn within one kick of a ball; they had the free kick to win it and I thought it was over but we came up and got the two or three scores in a row. I’m absolutely delighted to get back here next week.”

Spirited UUJ lose to Derry

Derry 1-16
Jordanstown 0-14

A goalscoring return for Paddy Bradley from a cruciate ligament injury capped a productive night for Derry as they made it two wins from two against Jordanstown in Section C of the McKenna Cup tonight at Celtic Park.

UUJ opened the scoring when Neil McAdam pointed from 40 metres but the home team quickly took control as points from Enda Lynn and Cailean O’Boyle from frees before Gerard O’Kane pointed from close range and Lynn followed suit for a 0-4 to 0-1 Derry lead after 14 minutes.

A point from Eoin Wade interrupted the Derry flow but two O’Boyle points extended Derry’s lead to four.

The students responded with a score from Diarmuid McNulty before a nine-minute interval for a serious looking injury to UUJ’s CJ McGourty. A brace from Mark Lynch saw Derry lead 0-8 to 0-3 but scores from Paul Devlin and McNulty saw the Poly close the gap to 0-8 to 0-5 at the interval.

After the break the students showed plenty of endeavour with Diarmuid McNulty looking lively and they still only trailed by two at 0-10 to 0-8 midway through the half.

But Bradley’s intervention in palming home from close range on 52 minutes after an intricate move proved decisive despite Jordanstown’s attacking endeavour.

UUJ surprise Ulster Champions Donegal

Donegal were humbled by the students of Jordanstown in the opening round of games in the Dr. McKenna Cup in O’Donnell Park, Letterkenny.

Donegal 0-9

UUJ 0-11

The Belfast college were sharper in most departments as they led on five occasions in the opening half and they responded well when going behind early in the second period.

In the end it was Antrim’s CJ McGourty who proved the matchwinner, firing the last four points for UUJ to take them over the line.

Donegal did have plenty of chances in the second period with Dermot Molloy and David Walsh both having goal chances, the latter blazing wide when put through with fifteen minutes left.

The misses proved vital as UUJ powered home while Donegal lost midfielder Neil Gallagher to a second yellow card in the final minutes.

In a lacklustre first half, the sides were level on five occasions with Ciaran Clarke in top shooting form for UUJ while Dermot Molloy kept Donegal in touch with four points.

Jordanstown’s Kieran Hughes at full-forward proved a real handful for All-Star Neil McGee, creating a couple of goal openings, one of which just evaded the inrushing Eoin Waide, early on. Waide and his Naomh Conaill clubmate, Leo McLoone, were among the top performers for the Belfast college.

The students looked sharper than Donegal for most of the opening half as the home side lacked any real punch up front.

Chris Clarke put them ahead on three occasions in the opening 17 minutes but Dermot Molloy (despite missing a number of chances) hit back with two points and Ryan Bradley got the other to leave the sides level. In the final ten minutes of the half Molloy twice cancelled points from Neil McAdam and Ciaran Donnelly to leave the sides locked at 0-5 each at the break.

The introduction of 18-year-old Patrick McBrearty was the spark which saw Donegal go two clear early in the second half, but UUJ kept battling with Diarmuid McNulty and a Ciaran Donnelly free had the sides level again on 51 minutes.

In the next six minutes Donegal had the chance to put the game out of sight as first David Walsh put Dermot Molloy through but UUJ ‘keeper Shane McCormick was quick off his line to block his effort and three minutes later Marty Boyle broke a ball into the path of David Walsh, who was through on goal, but elected to take his shot early with his left and pulled the ball well wide of the target.

It was then that CJ McGourty exploded into the game to make the vital contribution in the final 15 minutes. McGourty punished Donegal from a free on 57 minutes and again from play a minute later. Ryan Bradley, one of Donegal’s best performers, and Dermot Molloy levelled again with seven minutes left, but then McGourty struck for another brace in the 67th and 69th minutes.

Patrick McBrearty worked a good opening in the 70th minute but his shot was saved at the post but given the angle he was coming at, expecting to find the target was a bit optimistic. They had moved big Neil Gallagher to full-forward at this stage but found it hard to get the ball into him. They continued to press again in the final minutes and had a couple of opportunities with Gallagher denied at the expense of a ‘45’ before he picked up a second

Donegal: Peter Boyle; Peter Witherow, Neil McGee, Paddy McGrath; Marty Boyle, Anthony Thompson, Frank McGlynn; Neil Gallagher, Conor McManus; Gary McFadden, Ryan Bradley (0-2), David Walsh; Christy Toye, Stephen Griffin, Dermot Molloy (0-5). Subs., Patrick McBrearty (0-2, 1f) for McManus; Eamonn McGee for Witherow 52; Conor Classon for McFadden; Daniel McLaughlin for Toye, both 55

UUJ: Shane McCormick; Carlus McWilliams, Andrew McClean, Ryan Pickering; Ciaran McGinley, Leo McLoone, Eoin Waide; Niall Donnelly, Neil McAdam (0-1); Chris Clarke (0-3), Ciaran Donnelly (0-2,1f), Conor Sheridan; CJ McGourty (0-4,2f) Kieran Hughes, Diarmuid McNulty (0-1). Subs., Conor Davey for McWilliams ht; Chris Duggan for N Donnelly 37; Paul Devlin for C Donnelly 55

Referee: Martin McErlane (Derry)

Man of the match

A handful of the Donegal players performed well, such as Paddy McGrath, Neil Gallagher and Ryan Bradley, but quite a few struggled. For UUJ Kieran Hughes was outstanding from start to finish, causing big problems at full-forward and also used at midfield in the second half. He gets the nod ahead of CJ McGourty, who proved the matchwinner with his four late points.

Turning point

The missed goal opportunities by Dermot Molloy and David Walsh were the big turning points from a Donegal point of view. With just three players getting on the scoresheet, those misses were vital.
